Verifies List-Unsubscribe, List-Unsubscribe-Post, and ARC headers. In Gmail: open the message → ⋮ → Show original → copy all headers.

Enforcement timeline

Feb 2024
SPF, DKIM, and DMARC become mandatory for all bulk senders Gmail and Yahoo begin rejecting mail from domains without DMARC records and aligned SPF/DKIM. Enforcement phased in with initial temporary failures, then hard rejections.
Jun 2024
One-click unsubscribe (RFC 8058) required for 5K+/day senders List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers now mandatory. Unsubscribe must process within 2 days, with no login or extra clicks required.
Ongoing
0.3% spam rate ceiling (measured in Gmail Postmaster) Domains crossing 0.3% reported-spam rate are throttled or filtered. Target is below 0.1% to maintain clean reputation and consistent inbox placement.
2025+
Stricter enforcement expected; Microsoft and Apple align with similar rules Microsoft announced aligned bulk sender policies for Outlook.com inbound. Apple continues to reject spoofed mail at iCloud. Aligning now future-proofs deliverability.

What are Google and Yahoo's sender requirements?

In October 2023, Gmail and Yahoo announced a joint set of sender requirements that took effect in February 2024. The rules apply to every sender of marketing or transactional email to Gmail and Yahoo addresses, with stricter enforcement for bulk senders — defined as domains sending more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail addresses. Missing any mandatory requirement leads to spam-folder placement, throttling, or outright rejection.

Email authentication

Every sender must publish valid SPF and DKIM records. Bulk senders must additionally publish DMARC with at least p=none, and align the From: domain with either SPF or DKIM. Misalignment causes immediate failure.

One-click unsubscribe

Bulk senders must include RFC 8058 List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers. Unsubscribes must be honored within two days. Links buried in email bodies no longer satisfy the requirement.

TLS encryption

All mail to Gmail and Yahoo must be transmitted over TLS. Cleartext SMTP or TLS downgrades will be rejected. Publishing MTA-STS and TLS-RPT is strongly recommended to prevent silent downgrades on the inbound path.

Spam rate discipline

Google publishes a 0.3% spam rate ceiling in Postmaster Tools. Crossing it triggers filtering and throttling. Real-world target is under 0.1% — bulk senders above 0.3% see sudden, domain-wide deliverability collapse.

From: header alignment

The domain in the From: header must match the SPF domain or the DKIM signing domain. Most deliverability regressions after February 2024 trace back to unaligned third-party senders like Salesforce, HubSpot, or Marketo.

ARC signing for forwarders

If your mail is forwarded through mailing lists or shared inboxes, enable ARC signing so downstream mailbox providers can still verify the original authentication results. Without ARC, forwarded mail often fails DMARC at Gmail.
